Quality Character Voiceover with Leah

April 25, 2025 by wadmin

Character voiceover is a popular term in the industry and refers to playing the role of a specific personality for a project. Characters are frequently found in eLearning and corporate narration, and eLearning voice-over often has a general narrator and multiple characters speaking to various business scenarios.

Creating a Signature Character Sound

Typical character styles include animation personalities such as Disney princesses, cute, cuddly animals in educational videos, or wise men or women in gaming storylines. The character sound can also include authentic audio to mimic babies, children, teenagers, adults, and senior citizens. Even an inanimate object such as a shoe, an apple, or a pencil can have a character voice. The possibilities are endless and up to the creative director, writers, or producers’ innovative vision.

The voice actor must be creative and imaginative when thinking of a character’s voice. They must have a wide vocal range and take care to protect their vocal cords. They may laugh, cry, scream, or make odd sounds for hours to perfect the character. Leah has learned many tips and techniques from voice coaches and directors to tap into the actor’s psyche and draw out characters based on previous life experiences, people they’ve met, and pure imagination.

Places You’ll Find Character Voiceover

Character voiceover is more demanding than eLearning, promos, trailers, and corporate work because it requires the use of your whole body. Leah expertly delivers character voiceovers for:

  • Animation
  • Commercials
  • Audiobooks
  • Gaming
  • Avatars
  • Role Play
  • Films
  • Cell Phone Apps
  • Virtual Assistants
  • And more!

The video games market is one of the largest consumers of character voiceover in the fastest-growing market within digital media. In 2022, the worldwide revenue was US$197 billion and is expected to grow to US$285 billion in 2027.

Examples of Leah’s Character Work

Leah has performed character work for many clients and companies, such as Air Jordan, Xbox, Motorola, Barbie, Sam’s Club, Brawl Stars, TD Bank, Yotta Games, and more. She enjoys performing many vastly different characters and finds it thrilling and exciting. Her previous acting experience makes her highly qualified, with the skills to make each character unique. She’ll create a backstory for each character so they come alive in the audio. Picturing where these characters live, how they grew up, what fears or aspirations they have, and what each one looks like are all building blocks used to animate each personality. She will write a full brief on the character first, then explore various voices.

Leah can manipulate her voice from alto-soprano to a tenor, allowing her to bring many characters to life. She can also perform a multitude of accents if the character is from New York, the Southern Caribbean, Jamaica, Africa, Spain, Canada, the UK, Eastern European, and many more. She has also worked with industry great Elle-Ray Hennessy to draw out over 20 characters showcased on her Animation demo for your listening pleasure. Leah would love to work with your team to create and perform your character and story. Feel free to contact her anytime and learn more!

Commercial Voiceover: A Trip down Memory Lane

March 4, 2025 by wadmin

From Jiffy to Juicy Fruit, from sad and sappy commercials of the 80’s, to loud and bright Old Navy and iPod Commercials of the 2000’s. Something we can all agree on; those were memorable examples of commercial voice over.

What makes a commercial voice over memorable? Could it be the product itself? Most likely not. It’s usually the way the product or service was advertised, how it caught our attention and how it was forever ingrained in our grey matter. Perhaps they used a song, a funny character, or a memorable Voice Over. Whatever it is, decades of marketing research and psychology go into making it memorable, and more importantly, leading to sales.

Voice Over is one major aspect of that process. Why? Because we are all human! And listening to a voice that speaks to our mind, heart and soul really does make a difference in buying power. In a world surrounded by A.I., there’s just something about the human voice that truly makes personal connections. Maybe it makes us laugh, pulls on our heart strings, but whatever it is, it isn’t going anywhere anytime soon.

Why Has it Changed?

The style of Voice has really changed over the years. When many think of Commercial Voice Over, they think of a loud, boomy voice screaming “This deal won’t last long, buy now before it’s too late!” But is that what we hear nowadays? Not likely. Haven’t you noticed the style of voice has been majorly toned down over the years. Do a test, and listen to 5-10 commercials the next time you turn on the tube and mentally note the style, gender and tone of voice speaking to you. It’s pretty interesting what you’ll note! Why could that be? Because, never before in history have humans had so much information delivered to us at lightening speed. From the moment we open our eyes in the morning and grab our phone, turn on the TV, listen to Alexa telling us our upcoming schedule, tune on the car radio, switch on our work computers, there’s no shortage of information coming at us. Don’t you find it gets just a little tiring? Well, that’s exactly why the majority of Commercial voices that speak to us, aren’t “selling” us anymore, they’re simply “telling” us about the product, allowing us to make our own buying decision. We have the power, not the brand.

Oddly enough you’ll notice the most expensive commercials on TV, have the least “Selly/Announcer“ voices, and the local or inexpensive commercials do. Think Big Bank commercials vs. Joe’s Buy and Sell ones. Can you hear a difference?

A Newbie’s Guide to Commercial Voice Over

When I got started in Voice Over, I was a victim of the Announcer read as they call it. I wanted to yell, shout and use lots of inflection in my voice. It was a rude-awakening when my coaches told me to stop projecting, get close to the mic and just speak like I’m talking to my best friend over coffee about this “cool new thing” I discovered that’s the CONVERSATIONAL read!! Trust me, it wasn’t easy. It took some time to get used to that, but the more I observed television and the radio, the easier it got.

Nailing the Conversational Read!

This took me awhile to understand. Isn’t all Voice Over Conversational? Nope! It’s hard to sound like you’re NOT reading when you ARE reading! This is where the old adage “Practice makes (almost) perfect” comes to play. When speaking on the phone, or to friends, and in business meetings we don’t speak perfectly. We flub up. We speak quickly, then slowly. We might stutter here, and there and use various inflections. That’s the art of the Conversational read. Look at actors! They too don’t read their lines perfectly, they use those little nuances to keep the performance as real as possible. It’s the same in Voice Over.

Is the Announcer Read Gone Forever?

The important aspect of a good Voice Actor is the ability to perform all styles. Just because Announcer reads aren’t the fad right now, it doesn’t mean they won’t ever come back. You’ll still notice them around, but they’re usually tongue-in-cheek and over-bearing on purpose. I like to hear it, it makes me laugh, especially in pizza commercials.

My Line of Work:

In my line of work I perform a multitude of styles of Commercial work. Generally speaking, Conversational reads are still king, but I have played the Announcer role as well as Warm and Empathetic, (think Non-profit), Millennial (think Whole Foods), Anthemic (think Banks), Quirky and Sarcastic, (think Tech) Luxurious (think expensive cars) and many more.

I truly don’t have one favourite over another. I love the fact that every day is never the same, one moment I could be playing a character and the next I could be doing an empathic read. It’s more fun that way right? Truly, the product or service will provide the foundation for the style of read, and it’s up to the Actor to discern the style and deliver to job.

It would be great to collaborate with your team in achieving your desired style and tone. Feel free to drop me a line and we can discuss that perfect voice for your next commercial! 🙂

The Wacky Wonderful World of Animation Voice Over!

March 4, 2025 by wadmin

As the pinnacle of the industry animation voice over is what most people think of when you say “I’m a Voice Actor”. They think “Oh, so you do voices for cartoons and stuff?” Any fellow voice actor will attest to this. And there’s a reason for that. Because being able to portray different sounds, tones, expressions, and rhythms seem relatively difficult. And it really is! In order to find characters within oneself, it takes time, focus, and a lot of energy!

From Humble Beginnings

Mickey Mouse was believed to be the first Animation character Voice Over back in 1928. Whether that is exactly true or not, all we know the incredible change we have seen in talent, abilities, and characters over the 20th and into the 21st century.

All of us can remember characters from our favorite movies and TV animation. These are voices we never forget, and often imitate with a few chuckles in-between. Animation and character voices are probably the most memorable in the voice over industry. They don’t sound typical or boring. They are wild, fun, and different. They resonate and find their way into our long-term memory and often remind us of happy and positive moments when we were kids.

Animation Voice Over That Sticks

Who is the famous voice from your past? I always remember those pigeons on Warner Brothers’ Animaniacs. What about Porky Pig or Stewie from Family Guy? These actors really left an impression on us for many years and that’s because animation breaks us out of the norm into a fantastical world of excitement and possibilities.

What’s so interesting about animation is all the variety of sounds and styles one can make. Did you know there are 10 different ways to place your voice? By moving your muscles one can create hundreds of variations of voices. It’s really incredible what the body can do.

Animation Over the Years

Over the years, we’ve definitely seen a change in the style of animation. Companies like The Cartoon Network or Adult Swim have more adult cartoon content and you’ll notice actors more often speaking in their normal voices rather than the classic exaggerated style.

In blockbuster animated movies of the last 20 years, technology has transcended the silver screen into a virtual reality world, and the style of voices has also become more normalized. Famous on-camera actors are snagging the spots from voice actors resulting in a star-studded cast raking in big bucks at the box office. And why not? Animated movies aren’t just for kids anymore, they are probably now more entertaining for the parents.

The Future of Animation Voice Over

Animation isn’t going anywhere! It’s only gained popularity over the years. There are endless tv shows, movies, and corporate videos being created daily! It’s a genre that has reigned for many years with no end in sight. With the new Web 3  – Metaverse coming out shortly, experts are suspecting humans will have their own characters they can customize with voices and appearances to perform daily tasks.

Animation Voice Over by Leah

For Leah’s animation demo, she had a handful of coaches to work with, yet, it was the easiest decision to date. She was fortunate to work with multi-award winner Elle-Ray Hennessy. Elle has years of experience and she really encompasses everything an animation coach should be. Her holistic approach allowed Leah to get creative and play with many interesting and exciting characters.

Have a listen to her demo and count all the characters you can hear. You will hear men, women, babies, and a whole gambit of characters and various accents. We coached together for months and it was the most memorable experience she’s had in voice over to date.

Leah Performs Expert Corporate Narration

March 4, 2025 by wadmin

Corporate narration is the workhorse of the voice over industry. What does this mean? Although commercials typically have larger budgets, most of the available content and my business comes from corporate narration.

Narration has come a long way from dull, dreary WHMIS videos played on VHS tapes in a stuffy office to cool techy Youtube or Vimeo videos. The corporate voice age has also evolved, and middle-Aged voices used to reign over most content, and now we are seeing voices such as Millennial and even Gen-Z voices becoming more popular.

The goal has always been to enlighten the listener. Your video is perhaps to speak to your staff or your customer. Regardless of the audience, you want your video to say: “This is who we are, and this is what we stand for!” Once you determine the goal of your video, it is easier to choose the voice that will deliver the message.

Which Corporate Narration Voice is Best?

That is a personal decision. Who is your target audience? Is it seniors, millennials, or a group in-between? Making that decision will help determine the best voice for your business. Having worked in various industries such as government, tech, health, and insurance, one voice that doesn’t work is boring.

Nothing is worse than sitting in a dark board room or at your desk at 3:00 p.m. feeling exhausted and being forced to listen to a video with a dreary, corporate voice speaking at you. Even worse is the new girl’s voice from HR’s office, or an Artificially Intelligent voice! With a weak voice, you risk losing focus with your staff. Your voice, whoever it may be, should be BELIEVABLE, ENGAGING, and CONVERSATIONAL. The listener needs to stay engaged. Corporate narration comes at a cost, and the client should be satisfied.

The X-Factor

After working in various industries for over 15 years and listening to those videos, Leah knows precisely what not to do and what will and will not work. There can be various tones of corporate narration in commercial work, and they can be warm and empathetic, millennial, anthemic, quirky, and even luxurious. Whichever you decide to choose, that voice should be authentic and engaging.

The Future of Corporate Narration

Whether corporate narration will remain on current platforms or not (the internet or in the Metaverse), nobody knows but an engaging, conversational, and encouraging voice will always be appreciated.

Leah’s Demo!

When listening to Leah’s corporate narration voice over demo, you’ll notice a variety of styles. Her demo starts with a very conversational, millennial tone. This is her natural speaking voice, a Young Adult voice 18-35, the younger side of the spectrum. She books quite a bit of work in this age category, as it’s the most authentic for her to portray.

  • The next spot is a more intense, dynamic voice that works well in the fitness, health, and tech industries. Usually, sportier, more vital, more matter-of-fact voices work well in this category.
  • The next is a soft, empathetic, and serious voice. This tone of voice works quite well for non-profit, government, and health industries.
  • Next is a millennial and quirky spot. This tone works well with children, teens, fast food, and pet industries.
  • The next spot is an anthemic, encouraging sound – this tone works well with big corporations, tech companies, financial industries. This would be the closest to portraying a middle-aged voice.
  • The last spot is designed for kids, and it’s quirky and engaging. This works well for education tools, games, and toys.

Collaborate With Leah on Your Corporate Narration Project!

Leah enjoyed creating her corporate narration demo. She and her producer wanted various genres and styles to showcase her range, and she enjoys using a wide range of styles and tones in her work. Leah looks forward to collaborating with your team to achieve your desired style and image. Feel free to contact her to discuss your next corporate narration project.
